Field Notes

Description:

Medium size common waterbird resembles a duck in shape but has a white chicken like bill. The body is deeply dark bluish gray which blends to black on the head and lighter gray on the chest and belly. The legs are a greenish yellow and the feet are lobed instead of webbed.

Habitat:

Marshes
Freshwater Wetlands

Notes:

These birds are fun to watch, they both swim and dive and can act 'crazy as a coot' when defending their nest or young!

I've never noticed what beautiful red eyes they have before!
Cool---I will keep trying!
Thank you Misako and yes...do keep trying! Emma, that would be awesome to see, I understand that they are greenish in colour and lobbed instead of webbed! Thank you!
@ Misako, try and get a photograph of their feet. They are digital. Unique.
Great photo. They have coots at Aquatic Park in Berkeley where I saw the green heron, but I could not get good photos of them. I will keep trying!
