Field Notes

Description:

Salticidae; Heliophaninae; Cosmophasis parangpilota Barrion & Litsinger, 1995. Since the time I started taking pictures and keeping notes on wildlife in the area of the Philippines where I live, I have spotted Cosmophasis parangpilota many times. It is such a beautiful spider, it made a great impression the first time I saw one and, although I could not claim to be an expert on this spider, I feel that I know it well enough, not to be wrong in what I am about to say. This is my third spotting, for Project Noah, of C. parangpilota in the last five months. The previous spottings are; https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1294893968 and https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/333458170. But these three spottings (including this one) are not the only specimens I have seen in this time frame. I am sure that I have encountered at least three others that I did not even photograph, because I was concentrating on other creatures on each of those occasions. I am now pretty sure that this species is, in my immediate area, the most common jumping spider. So, I now have rather mixed feelings. I used to think of it as being quite special and rather exotic, but it seems to have become a very commonplace, "bread and butter" Jumping Spider.

Habitat:

This tiny juvenile C. parangpilota was spotted in the vegetable patch in our backyard.
