Field Notes

Description:

Very furry moth about 2 cm long that rests with the tail of the abdomen raised in the air (see second picture). The legs all have thick bands of hair. The moth is basically grey with brown patterns. Very tranquil and falls to the ground rather than fly when disturbs. Family Apatelodidae, the American Silkworm moths. It looks similar to the Spotted Apatelodes Moth, Apatelodes torrefacta (http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/slow.php?plate=53&page=1&size…)

Habitat:

Garden lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
