the red color on the sides are just the reflection from the pot where it was on..
They're rarely this colorful and who knows how they're not in Chrysomelidae. I've spotted another and its a Tenebrionidae. I think yours is too. But I don't know the species http://www.flickr.com/photos/66925960@N08/6190126681/in/set-72157627569531870
