Field Notes

Habitat:

This Common Bushbrown was spotted in the rice field behind our house.

Notes:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Mycalesis perseus caesonia Wallengren, 1860. This butterfly almost certainly eclosed from its chrysalis, early this morning. I took these two photos just before 8:00 a.m. and it was, as you can see, in absolutely perfect condition. If it had emerged yesterday morning (they always exit from the chrysalis at dawn) it would have suffered, at least, a small amount of "wear and tear" in that 24 hour period. The second photo was actually taken first and, despite the poor angle, I could see that it was in perfect condition. So, I decided to wait, in the hope of getting a better view. A couple of minutes later, it fluttered to new position and I got the picture I wanted (the one shown first).
