Field Notes

Description:

Blue-winged wasp. Range from New England to Florida and west to the Rocky Mountains in North America. The adult is about one-half inch long with black antennae and a shiny black head, thorax and fore abdomen. Midway along the abdomen are two yellow spots, one on each side. The hind portion of the abdomen is reddish brown and somewhat fuzzy. Wings are blue-black. From June to October.

Habitat:

This blue-winged wasp was spotted in a goldenrod field at Kinder Farm County Park in Millersville, Maryland.
