Scolymus hispanicus
43.843, 15.8949
Field Notes
Description:
Also known as Spanish-oyster thistle or Common golden thistle, this hardy plant is a flowering herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant, member of Asteraceae family. It grows to some 50 cm in height, and presents rough, spiny stems and leaves. The flowerheads are bright yellow to orange-yellow, 2–3 cm across.
Habitat:
Originating from Mediterranean, Spanish salsify grows on all kinds of soil, although it thrives best on light-textured soils that are rich in organic matter. Here, observed on a dry rocky-and-grassland escarpment, dominating a large Skradin valley. The rich Skradin valley is close to Krka National Park, park itself enclosing a river forming several waterfalls and lakes, and surrounded by a lush broad leaved forest. However, this escarpment is much more arid, and covered by a vegetation adapted to prolonged arid conditions.
Notes:
Spanish salsify is known as medicinal (for its diuretic properties mainly; but it also has some sweat-preventing uses) and comestible plant - young plants and roots are particularly appreciated in Spain in stews, soups, omelets and salads.
