Field Notes

Description:

"The male's plumage is all black with a prominent black crest made up of elongated feathers from the forehead and crown. The bill is dark grey. Habitat:

This beautiful bird was calling to the female and juvenile while she was here for a drink at the long cattle trough at the Prison Boab Tree.

Oftentimes I have seen these magnificent birds hanging out in groups of 2 or 3 and other times in large groups as they land in a tree to roost for the night. While others of this subspecies are listed as Vulnerable, Endangered or otherwise, this particular subspecies appears to be abundant but little studied...
