Description:
This weekend we have found a small clan of Fire salamanders in their daytime hiding place, in a manhole about 1m deep. There were a dozen animals in this pile. They are about 10 to 20cm in length, and are conspicuously coloured and easy to recognize.
Habitat:
Found in their daytime hiding place, a manhole with water connection for the neighbouring house. The owner explained this clan is always there, every day. Found in rural suburbs if Lyon, east-central France, in a garden bordering a broadleaved forest.
Notes:
Based on their colouring, with yellow spots roughly organised in two parallel lines, I can suppose the subspecies - S. s. terrestris, the most common one in France.
