Field Notes

Description:

This is a Striped Hyena spotted in Lake Nakuru, Kenya.

Striped Hyena's are much rarer than the Spotted Hyena's and tend to be solitary, rather than in a pack.

They don't usually have a territory as such and just walk each day (or night) for many miles to find food.

Habitat:

Grasslands around Lake

Notes:

Striped Hyena's are usually predominantly nocturnal so I think we were lucky to see this one wandering around during the day.

“Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!”
