Emma, this caterpillar looks to me to be different from a sawfly. It is a typical lepidoptera caterpillar and quite possibly from the Pieridae family. A sawfly larva will have no prolegs and a tapered tail http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8595846
Could this be the caterpillar of two lined Larch Sawfly?
This caterpillar was 3 cm long and about 3 mm wide. Light greenish yellow.
