Field Notes

Habitat:

This Luzon Grass Dart was spotted, in the rice mill backyard, resting on unidentified foliage under a clump of bamboo.

Notes:

Hesperiidae; Hesperiinae; Taractrocera luzonensis luzonensis Staudinger,1889. This photo of the Luzon Grass Dart is the result of my attempt to capture a shot of it in flight. I could see that it was about to take off, but I clicked a fraction of a second too soon. It was gone from sight, before I could make another attempt. I almost discarded the photo, but decided to keep it because it does show a partial ventral view of the "jet plane" position, unique to the subfamily Hesperiinae. This subspecies, Taractrocera luzonensis luzonensis, is endemic to the Philippines.
