Description:

They have eight legs and are easily recognized by the pair of grasping claws and the narrow, segmented tail, often carried in a characteristic forward curve over the back, ending with a venomous stinger.

Though the scorpion has a fearsome reputation as venomous, only about 25 species are known to have venom capable of killing a human being.

Habitat:

Scorpions are found on all major land masses .

Thanks Martin for highlighting about the species classification .Yes it belongs to the heterometrus species .The black scorpion found in india referred as Asian forest scorpion (Heterometrus longimanus) . All scorpions can sting human and all scorpions carry venom. Not all venom from scorpions is dangerous to humans.
What do you know about how dangerous this one is? Is it Heterometrius sp?
In rural belt these are teaming ...however i have bumped into this centipedes near one of the coffee shop in kilpauk , chennai . It has been long time since i have seen scorpion in chennai city ....

I remember seeing a huge black scorpion in our backyard in Chennai, when I was a kid. They called these nattuvaakalli (??) - am I right ? Where did you spot this scary thing ? - such a shiny armour !
