Field Notes

Description:

A small, nonvenomous member of the garter snake family, the ribbon snake can attain a length of 1 meter, although 40-60 cm. is much more common. Three light colored lines run down the length of the snake.

Habitat:

The snake is highly aquatic, and is commonly found around the edge of lakes and ponds, and along the riparian zone of streams and rivers.

Notes:

Primary diet consists of fish and amphibians, although the snake will also take small mammals, insects and other small reptiles.
