Elk lower jaw
Cervus canadensis
46.8669, -120.509
Field Notes
Description:
A mature elk lower jawbone. Probably 8 years or older based on the severely worn teeth. Elk consume an average of 9.1 kilograms (20 lb) of various vegetation daily. Like deer and moose, elk are ruminants. They initially chew their food just enough to swallow it. Their side to side chewing motions ware the teeth down and can eventually cause starvation due to the fact that they can't eat enough to support themselves.
Habitat:
Spotted in the Umtanum mountains.
