Field Notes

Description:

Male and female are primarily black with red patch on hindwing. Both sexes lack tails. Upper surface of male forewing has triangular blue-green patch, female has white patch. Wing span about 4 - 6 cm

Habitat:

butterfly house Vienna
in the wilde: Southern Mexico south into Central America. Tropical forests and associated edges and openings.

Warst du im Schmetterlingshaus in der Nähe der Hofburg? Ich bin im Juni in Wien und werde mal im Naturhistorischen Museum und in Buchantiquariaten herumstöbern. Vielleicht finde ich da noch was mit Schmetterlingen.

Papilionidae, Parides sp., Melpomene is from a different family (Nymphalidae).
