Field Notes

Description:

Panoquina species are known as long-winged skippers and are distinguished by their elongated pointed forewings that project far beyond the hindwings when at rest. The Obscure skipper is the smallest of the long-winged skippers. Hindwing with 3 spots that can vary from bold to not present, with two small ones close together.

Habitat:

Coastal southern U.S., Mexico, Central America, South America. Beach scrub, salt marshes, open fields.
Host Plants: Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum)

Notes:

Spotted on Snow Squarestem (Melanthera nivea), a very common nectar plant found in the beach scrub of this area.
