Description:

Spotted, green, spiky plant growing close to the ground below trees.

Habitat:

Spotted on a hiking trail at Lake Hodges in Escondido.

I agree with Ava.....definitely an aloe plant... :)
Interesting, it was near a small neighborhood with plenty of cactus and succulents, but I wonder how long it would have taken to travel from their garden, across the street, through all the plants to finally rest beside a tree near the lake. It's amazing how some little seeds can travel past as much as 30 miles away and I'm still thinking about how neat it is that this probably went about half a mile!
This looks like an aloe. It must have escaped from a garden as it's native to South Africa.
