Field Notes

Description:

A female rhinoceros beetle (Dynastidae/Dynastinae) measuring maybe 4cm long. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros_beetle

Habitat:

Found on terrace/porch of a village house. Surrounding habitats include freshwater swampforest, sago swamp, ocean beach and a forested limestone cliff ridge.

Notes:

This beetle showed up at the house overnight, presumably attracted to a porch light. Male rhinoceros beetles (this or a different species) have been observed a number of times on this porch.

Very alike.. http://www.wicklowmountainsnationalpark.ie/Invertebrates.html
This is a scarab beetle. Scarabs include dung beetles, flower beetles and rhino beetles. Rhino beetles (Dynastidae) have the large horns, or, at least the males do. I suspect this is a female dynastid beetle.
