Field Notes

Description:

Diurnal bird 10" - 12" in height. Thick bill merges with forehead producing characteristic profile. Green head, back and wings, with white collar and belly. Males have a red/orange patch on chest.

Habitat:

Found along rivers, lakes, and oxbows in Amazonia. Most frequently found in riparian zone along waterways.

Notes:

The kingfisher feeds on fish, amphibians and aquatic arthropods.
