Definitely Callistemon .. looks like Little John.. I've killed a couple of these so I'm envious if you can grow them there.

do you remember if it was small and bushlike? if it was then it might be a dwarf bottlebrush - Callistemon 'Little John' i agree, it does look like a type of bottlebrush
