Orca
Orcinus orca
57.7838, -152.41
Field Notes
Description:
A pod of at least 5 with one baby. The one in the first photo is the calf; you can tell a calf by both the size and also because instead of white markings they are somewhat of a pale orange. The day before I took these photos, they were seen by many local people teaching the calf how to hunt here. They were attacking a sea lion but not killing it and tossing it around in the water so they could teach the calf how to do it.
Habitat:
In the channel near the harbor very close to town.
Notes:
In the winter and spring the orca come into the channel more often, and people can observe them right from shore. I see them offshore somewhat frequently in the summer, but I have not seen them in the channel in the summer.
