Thick neck and stout, gray-black bill
Gray scalloped back
White throat and chest

Common Loon in winter (Nonbreeding) plumage.

Donna, Thanks for posting this photo. I spend a lot of time canoeing wilderness areas in northern Minnesota and parts of nearby Canada and have fond memories of these gorgeous birds and listening to their haunting yodels and wails at night when I'm resting in my tent.
