The Downy beak is 1/2 the width of the head while the Hairy beak is about the width of the entire head...and is a bit bigger than the Downy.
Looks like a Downy Woodpecker to me! We have them up on Lookout Mountain...they come to our birdfeeders! Beautiful!
The hairy woodpecker is very similar, yet has a slightly longer beak. It's really hard to tell them apart sometimes, but I'm going to guess downy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_woodpecker
