Field Notes

Description:

Yellow-crowned Night-herons are a medium-sized heron with a black face and bill with white cheeks. These herons are nocturnal and stalk their pray at night by wading through shallow waters or ambushing their prey at the water’s edge.

Habitat:

Yellow-crowned Night-herons typically live near coastal wetlands along islands, mangroves, and barrier beaches. Further inland they tend to live in wooded swamp areas, rivers, or lakes. The best time to find this bird on Spring Lake is to visit during the summer months when the Night-heron comes to breed.
