Field Notes

Description:

A dense shrub of tangled twisting grey smooth stems with heads of leathery leaves dark green on top and lighter underneath. Plants can grow in salt water as in tidal zones and reach 10 metres. They can also handle some acidity need full sun and grow aerial roots.

Habitat:

Protected coastal bays and inlets around the Indian Ocean including New Zealand, South Africa and SE Asia. (-38 degrees to +18 degrees latitude).

Notes:

The only mangrove type in Westernport Bay, Victoria, Australia
Yet to add open flowers, fruits.

And mangroves are particularly important in Westernport Bay which has up to 30% of its area exposed during low tide. These shallow mud flats are a major natural fish nursery. This system is fragile.
So right Alice! More to come yet on this. These mangrove communities are the southern most in the world and are at considerable risk from human activity. I hope to ultimately build links to the many other life-networks that are totally dependent upon the mangroves.
You have good information, but could also add they give protection to fish nurseries. Good series!
