I just noticed that I was talking about butterflies from Chile, when I saw that your beauty is a Tico!!
I was soo stupid! Hypanartia trimaculata autumna, the Central American type of Hypanartia kefersteini.
If you look at the scalopped/falcated forewings there are indeed some similarities between Hypanartia and Vanessa. And even in within the Hypanartia genus there are different ones with different wing shapes and w/o tails. This ine is definitely a Hypanartia sp. I was obviously a fool about looking for Chile since it is a real Tico one!!
Hi Bayucca, A friend of mine suggest that it could be of the genus Vannesa.
Hypanartia sp., Mapwing. Thought an easy one, but it is definitely not! There are different species around. Chile is not a common covered area in the literature. I have to go a little bit deeper for this one. It looks like Hypanartia kefersteini, which is very common, but usually not so far south. I have some slight doubts it is not Kefersteini. I'll keep an eye on it... Wonderful capture!!
I would look under angle-winged butterflies for the name.
Beautiful! Welcome to Project Noah Sufrostico!
