Field Notes

Description:

A large red dragonfly with amber coloured wing base and crimson reticulation in fore and hind wings. Eyes are blood red above, reddish brown laterally and bluish grey beneath. Thorax is red dorsally and olivaceous with reddish suffusion laterally. Wings are transparent with crimson reticulation. Extreme base of fore wings have a golden amber yellow spot. The amber coloured spot on the base of hind wing is broader. The network of venation over the amber spot is bright crimson. Abdomen is blood red with some black markings on segments 8 & 9.

General coloration of female is rusty brown instead of blood red. Eyes are brown above. Basal area of hind wing is dark reddish brown. Hind wing has three distinctive dark areas at the base. Abdomen is greenish-olivaceous and sometimes with black dorsal markings as in males.

Habitat:

Found in marshes, weedy ponds, paddy fields and lakes. Breeds in marshes and other similar habitats. Distribution throughout peninsular India, Sri Lanka
extending to Malaysia.
