Field Notes

Description:

Shrubby evergreen twining climber to 4m, small light blue bell shaped flowers with five petals (10mm), fruits like pill capsules 15mm long, furry, starting green and maturing to dark purple-black.

Habitat:

Thrives in coastal sandy soils with little nutrient content.

Notes:

I used to think this was an edible local native plant. It is actually a native of Western Australia and regarded as a potentially invasive species in Victoria. The plant it is mistaken for is Common Apple-berry, Billardiera scandens.
Yet another example of why we should not just grow 'Australian' native plants away from their homeland.
