Field Notes

Description:

A male and female northern cardinal. These beautiful birds are permanent residence on my property. Males are bright red, with a black mask and bright red beak. Females are more brownish gray, with red/orange outer wings, and an orange beak. Young males can easily be mistaken for females as their colors are very similar.

Habitat:

Can be found in backyards, parks, woodlots, and shrubby forest edges. They nest in dense tangles of shrubs and vines.
