White Admiral butterfly

This is the wing of a White Admiral butterfly under my new microscope. As in nearly all the moths and butterflies, the membrane that forms the broad surface of the wing is transparent; the color is contained in its dense covering of scales. Both membrane and scales are made of film-thin cuticle, the same material that makes up a beetle's armor or a lobster's shell.
