Field Notes

Description:

A true Florida native. Short bushy tree, reaching about 20 feet in height...numerous above ground roots called prop roots. The roots are reddish and tangled.

Habitat:

Brackish areas along creeks, bays, and lagoons.

Notes:

These trees thrive in salty environments and are able to obtain fresh water from salt water. Some secrete excess salt through their leaves...called sacrificial leaves, others block absorption of salt at their roots. The tree is also known as the 'Walking Tree' because of the way the roots appear to be walking across the water!
