Field Notes

Description:

Grasshoppers mating. About 4 in or 10 cm long.

Habitat:

The coast of Oaxaca lies well within the tropics at a latitude of about 16°. Monthly lows and highs are typically 18° C (64° F) and 45° C (113° F), averaging 30° C (86° F), with little variation from month to month. The region is generally arid along the coast with more rainfall in the nearby mountains. Most guidebooks say that the rainy season runs from May to October, but in recent years, the length of the rainy season has declined so that July to October is more accurate. September is usually the rainiest month. Amounts vary from year to year and most of the rainfall occurs on a relatively few days. Just because it is the rainy season does not mean it will be raining though; it just means it can rain. A typical day in the rainy season would be a clear morning, clouding up in the afternoon, with thunder heard in the nearby mountains.

Notes:

Taken at 10 am on the old Zapotec trail from Santa Maria de Huatulco to the sea at Santa Cruz. It is now a national park so is similar to when the Zapotec walked the same route thousands of years ago. How much they must have marveled at all the spottings!

Thank you for the help in id. There are a lot of insects this time of year. It is green and lush here in Huatulco during the late rainy season. The leaves show a lot of marks and holes from being eaten!
Romaleidae, Romaleinae, Taeniopoda sp., unfortunately too many around in your area. http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org/common/basic/Taxa.aspx?TaxonNameID=1115941 http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/35719967 http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/25077112?uid=2134&uid=2129&uid=2475671453&uid=2&uid=70&uid=3&uid=2475671443&uid=60&sid=21104204762051
