Field Notes

Description:

Green bird, at least one foot long, with bright reddish-orange beak.

Habitat:

Suburban area on a mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted feeding on palm fruit in my back yard. Numerous green parrots have exhibited this behavior since the palms fruited earlier in the summer. I set up a remote camera and managed to capture video of one of the parrots. The uploaded images are crops of frame captures from the video, and are unfortunately of low resolution. This species is not native to Hawaii; apparently escaped pets have managed to establish a feral population.

Flocks of these birds were neighbours; once. Your last shot is beautiful.
SukanyaDatta - Thanks for the feedback, and for the information on the neck ring. Today I tried to capture additional images of one of these birds and did so, but I was reduced to shooting through a window with a long lens. Any attempt to go outside frightened the birds off. I have posted crops of two of today's images as the fourth and fifth of this spotting. In each of those images a neck ring appears to be present.
Ring is not visible on the female...only males have prominent rings.
Looks like Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri)which are invasive in Hawaii. https://modernfarmer.com/2018/01/invasive-rose-ringed-parakeets-threatening-every-crop-on-hawaiian-island-kauai/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose-ringed_parakeet
