Mourning Dove
Zenaida macroura
30.4383, -84.2807
Field Notes
Description:
Plump-bodied and long-tailed, with short legs, small bill, and a head that looks particularly small in comparison to the body. The long, pointed tail is unique among North American doves. Their feet and legs are red in color, and they have a soft baby blue to white eye ring.
Habitat:
This is quoted from the Cornell lab all about birds site:
"You can see Mourning Doves nearly anywhere except the deep woods. Look for them in fields or patches of bare ground, or on overhead perches like telephone wires."
Though I disagree, as I live in heavy deep woods, and we have morning doves in our trees. They don't eat from my feeders but pick the seeds from the ground.
Notes:
The morning doves that frequent my property are very skittish and fly off as soon as they see humans, unlike the curious ones in the city (such as this pair) that sit and stare back at you rather than fly away.
