Description:
The distinctive ruddy shelduck has a beautiful orange-brown body plumage and a paler head. The male (shown here) has a black neck ring. A rare spotting for central Europe, this species normally winters further south and east.
Habitat:
An open pond with reeds and dense vegetation, the shores of which are frozen at this time (shown on the last shot at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8499550)
Notes:
The last Swiss census for this bird recorded only 15-25 breeding pairs. Previous summer spotting of this duck and his mate can be seen at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6890410 and http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6191257
