Field Notes

Description:

Some monarch butterflies. I am unsure of the name of the flower, but will try to find that out once they return in the spring.

Habitat:

Blithewood Gardens, part of Bard College Campus. Right near an estuary of the Hudson River in New York.

Notes:

The day was very overcast, and the monarchs were buffeted by the wind so badly I was surprised they could keep clinging to their flowers at times!

The front monarch is a male.

Beautiful series! Would make great addition to Monarch Migration Mission!
I definitely see that! That is a little detail that I wouldn't have noticed without her help!
River,Karen is very knowledgeable!
Thank you Marta! And thank you Karen for pointing that out, I never knew that before!
Very pretty! It's a male as it has the the spot of the lower wing that is the gland that releases pheromones to attract a female.
