su talla e de 55-67 cm; en plumaje nupcial su plumaje es blanco como la nieve con las plumas coberteras gfis plateado y los tremos blancos y negros; después de la muda la cabeza con estrías grises; el plumaje juvenil hasta el cuarto año presenta manchas tenues verdes.

Habitat:

en costas y en aguas cercanas al litoral, lagos y rios
