Field Notes

Notes:

Christmas Eve visitor out on the back deck! Bone-chilling but magnificently beautiful when it opened its eyes! It was gigantic and far larger than photos I've seen of this species on the glove of avian keepers. I guess it was also puffed up due to the cold however, it was at least 20 inches tall just pirched there. Wing-span was incredibly wide when it did finally take off over the houses and reminded me of a batman scene! Kept the little doggie inside that morning!

How lovely! Good idea to keep your dog indoors as I hear they can lift prey up to 15 lbs in weight!
It is so very strange, but for one day out of the year, always Christmas-New Year's week, a great horned (not sure if same individual), sits in our yard or the neighbour's yard and then we don't see any more until the next year! It is truly bizzare but I guess adds to their illusiveness.
I hear these guys most evenings but haven't had the good fortune to see one yet!
