Field Notes

Description:

Donkeys are being released by some ranchers near Dallas Texas. The donkeys are normally used to guard livestock. The donkeys don’t spook easily and stand their ground against coyotes. During normal rain years, the donkeys are free range grazers and are low-maintenance animals. However, because of the recent drought, they require hay for feed, Because of the drought hay prices have escalated from $90 to $310 a ton. The cost of providing feed to the animal in drought stricken is estimated at $3,000 per year. The regional animal shelter has reached its capacity and attempts are being made to ship the gentle guardians to other areas. To donate to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Equine Fund, visit www.aspca.org/donate.

Habitat:

Open range land or a local area with a lot of ground vegetation.

Notes:

Three donkeys have been rescued by nearby neighbors with large lots.We enjoy feeding them bunches of carrots on our long walks.

Keep on making people aware of the plight of the donkey. Praise the rescuers.
And imagine in more poor countrys, lets trie to do what we can arround us,it's not the total solution but at list we controle the damages
Appreciate your comment. It is a terrible thing to hear that such a noble animal is being so thoughlessly mistreated in other parts of the world. Our refuge is full and the animal auction houses will no longer take them. It is becoming difficult times for a loyal, servant and perhaps companion to man.
congratulations on your work whith the dunkys, very gentle and inteligent animals,in portugal it hapens the same and there are several refuges for dunkys because they are no more usefull, people are sometimes very "cruel" whith the animals that elp them during long years, great spott
