Field Notes

Description:

This green and orange female hummingbird has white tips on the underside of the tail. This is either an Allen's or Rufous hummingbird. "Female and juvenile Rufous and Allen's hummingbirds are nearly indistinguishable in the field - it's probably better not to try to identify them during migration, when their ranges overlap considerably. In Allen's Hummingbirds, the outermost tail feather is narrower than the other tail feathers." - All About Birds

Habitat:

Mexican Bush Sage this evening in the backyard.

Notes:

I shot from the hip in manual focus for this one! It spooked with the flash and didn't come back.

Thank you Liam. I couldn't compare the feather width without an Allen's there ;)
According to my Sibley's Guide the Allen's has narrower outer tail feathers, not so broad like this birds.
