Definitely a rain spider nest. Check my spottings, I have one of mom guarding the nest. She may have been on the back side of yours where you couldn't see her. She would not move unless threatened. Spiderlings remain inside until 1st moult and then move out.
Hi everyone! Thank you for the comments. It was definitely a nest, about the size of a man's fist. The pictures were taken over a period of about 3 days. Unfortunately I weren't lucky enough to get a shot of the builder. It was in our office garden and when I wanted to inspect it the next day it was gone. ..

A spider nest for sure, from it's relatively neat appearance and location in the grass I would hazard a guess at the genus Palystes (Rain spiders). The female is usually around closeby guarding her brood within
