Field Notes

Description:

The blue tit is one of the more colourful birds found in the UK, with its yellow, green and blue plumage. It's quite a small bird, smaller than the great tit, and usually spotted in at least pairs. They are year-round residents, but I have noticed them much more in the winter. A recent study found that the call blue tits that live in urban areas sounds much different than those that live in the countryside.

Habitat:

Most often found in woodlands, hedgerows, parks, gardens... places with trees are the best bet. Widespread throughout the UK, found all year round.

Notes:

The blue tits pictured here were flocking with some great tits. They were subsequently scared off by someone who came along the footpath and asked loudly, "What are you look at?" Argh! The picture quality suffered as I was losing daylight pretty quickly!

Nice spotting and amazing information Laura.
Thanks! They got a little grainy because the sun set so fast... but at least I got some pictures :)
