Field Notes

Description:

A pretty common bird, with all-black glossy feathers, a black bill and a smaller/sleaker build than the raven. They are very intelligent birds, and can recognise human faces (and remember them for a long time). For the most part they are solitary creatures, found alone or in pairs, though become sociable during winter roosts. As the name implies, they are scavengers, but will also worms, insects, eggs etc. They often mob birds of prey (I have seen them harass a tawny owl and a buzzard before) and even foxes sometimes.

Habitat:

Incredibly adaptable birds, they can be found almost anywhere, especially in urban areas where they scavenge bits and pieces off humans.

Notes:

I saw this guy perched on the railing next to a river. He posed for about 30 seconds to let me get this photo, then flew off! There are a lot of crows where I live.
