Field Notes

Description:

Same size as the pacific black duck. Three different kinds -all had dark heads but one had a dark bill, the other yellow and the third kind had a pale yellow streak on top of the eyes.

Habitat:

Fresh water lake

Notes:

Seen on Belgrave Lake, Victoria. All three kinds were swimming quite peacefully with the pacific black ducks. They may be hybrids ?? Pic # 3 shows a pacific black duck on the extreme left.
Can't give any other information as none of these came onshore for me to have a closer look.
Could anyone with expertise on Ducks help with identifying these, please. Thanks.

Liam, thanks for the ID. Some features look like the Khaki Campbell and it's quite possible that we have ducks flying in from all over, to this lake. However, I've decided to talk to the rangers at this reserve and get a definite ID. For now, I hope you don't mind if I re-name them as mallard hybrids. If you are a 100% sure, please let me know.

Thanks Daniele, I too read that the pacific black ducks breed with mallard hybrids but didn't know about the colour of the bill and feet.

Hi Leuba! My field guide to the birds of Australia (Simpson & Day) indicates that in Australia you find pacific black duck x mallard hybrids. The yellow bill and orange feet would indicate that these have some mallard in them
