Description:

This black skimmer was spotted amongst a group of gulls and terns. It is in its winter coloration. (Only the central bird in the 2nd picture is a black skimmer.)

Habitat:

Coastal beach.

Notes:

The Black Skimmer is protected in the USA under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

They are a joy to watch. This one was more interested in a nap. Must have been that time of day.
The skimmers are some of my favorites! I would see them feeding all the time in J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge at this time of year. I had some great photos of them with the lower beak in the water grabbing fish. They were always amazing to watch.
