Field Notes

Description:

A plant about 18" high with a rosette of broad lanceolate leaves with parallel veins running through the length of the leaves ( like a monocot). Flower heads are thick elongated and conical with stamens from the lower flowers extended to form delicate rings of pale yellow at the base of the inflorescence.

Habitat:

grasslands, open forests

Notes:

This is a common weed but one that has always fascinated me because of the flower heads with their delicate creamy "rings". This plant has inspired artists...
