Field Notes

Description:

This looks like a typical Agave plant. The group of plants was about 2 meters long with the leaves reaching 2-3 ft and the blossom close ot 5 ft tall. It turns out that the blossom here looks different than most on the internet as it is a younger bloom (See comments below).

Habitat:

Although the Century Plant is abundant in Ecuador, this was obviously planted for decorative purposes, so I'm not sure if this particular species is found naturally or only cultivated. These particular plants were in the middle of Quito, Ecuador, altitude 2,850 m.

Notes:

I really thought I would be able to find these on internet, and in fact I did find 3 different fotos, but none of them had either a common or scientific name. So, I need some help.

Yours is later in the bloom which is why the flowers look different, and a lot younger than the one I sent. A succulent specialist I just consulted says it's an Aloe arborescens. Yours is a lot younger than the one in the link I attached which is why the leaves may look different to you.

Hi Ava. Thanks. I saw the plants on the link you sent and passed them up as it looks to me like the flower blossom is opposite the one in my picture. On your link the "petals" are longest towards the bottom of the blossom and on mine they are longest at the top. I know nothing of these, so you are probably right and the ones in my picture are just in an earlier stage of bloom or something. If they are really the same, I will gladly upgrade to your suggestion.
