Description:

Douglas' grasswidow (Olsynium douglasii) is a wildflower in the iris family (Iridaceae). It is the only species in the genus Olsynium in North America. The flower has six purple tepals and is bell to star shape. Grows up to 12 inches. Has slender leaves at the base.

Habitat:

Spotted in the Cascade Mountain foothills in a moist open pine forest after snowmelt.

Notes:

Ranges in western North America from British Columbia to California. In Washington, it is found on both sides of the Cascade Mountains though more common on the east side.

Thank you Sukanka. It does have a strange name. It's other common names are Douglas' olsynium, grass-widow, blue-eyed grass, purple-eyed-grass, and satin flower.
