Uluhe Fern
Dicranopteris linearis
19.2631, -155.353
Field Notes
Description:
These beautiful fern fronds are used in floral arrangements too. On first seeing this fern with its unusual forking growth habit, there was so much of it in the park that I thought it might be invasive, but far from it, it is one of the things keeping the rainforest at Volcano National Park intact. Wonderful!
Habitat:
Native fern species of Hawaii, the uluhe is one of the most important plants of the Hawaiian rainforest, in some places seeming to keep out invasive, non-native species.
Notes:
Raindrops clinging to a new fern frond just unfurling at Volcanoes National Park, Big Island Hawaii.
